Keep these fun facts and tips handy for your next Black Bear encounter:

  • Black bears originated in North America, and have been here at least 1.5 million years.
  • Florida black bears live 10-15 years in the wild
  • They can run up to 30 miles an hour.
  • Bears can gain or lose over 100 pounds in one year.
  • A group of bears is properly called a "sleuth" or a "sloth," derived from Middle English for "slow.”
  • Males are called Boars, females are called Sows, babies are called Cubs and young bears are called Yearlings.
  • Approximately 25% of all black bear cubs do not survive their first year.
  • Placed on Florida’s list of threatened species in 1974.
