- Black bears originated in North America, and have
been here at least 1.5 million years.
- Florida black bears live 10-15
years in the wild
- They can run up to 30 miles an hour.
- Bears can gain
or lose over 100 pounds in one year.
- A group of bears is properly
called a "sleuth" or a "sloth,"
derived from Middle English for "slow.”
- Males are called
Boars, females are called Sows, babies are called Cubs and
young bears are called Yearlings.
- Approximately 25% of all black
bear cubs do not
survive their first year.
- Placed on Florida’s list of threatened
species in 1974.
