Keep these fun facts and tips handy for your next Crocodile
encounter:
- South Florida is the only place in the world where
you can find alligators and crocodiles.
- Crocodiles have two pairs of eyelids. The outer eyelids function
much like human eyelids and close from top to bottom. The second
pair or inner eyelids close from the sides towards the center
(think of window drapes), and are made of a thin transparent
membrane which allows the crocodile to see underwater.
- Crocodilians are the most vocal of all reptiles. Some species
can communicate over 20 different kinds of messages through sound.
- Genuine “crocodile tears.” Crocs
posess lachrymal glands which produce proteinaceous fluids or
tears. These tears are secreted behind the nictitating membrane
and help to clean the eye, reduce bacterial growth and lubricate
the passage of the nictitating membrane across the eye's surface.
- On average, crocodiles dive and stay underwater between 4 and
6 minutes.
- All crocodilians lack a urinary bladder and a vormeronasal organ;
this is used to detect pheromones and other chemical compounds
in animals.
- Crocodylus is derived from the Greek
word krokodeilos or “pebble worm.”
- On June
2006, a 23-foot saltwater crocodile from Orissa, India was entered
into the Guinness
Book of World Records as the Earth’s largest crocodile.
- Despite their outward appearance, a crocodile’s
internal anatomy closely resembles that of birds.
