  • Panthers go by many other names including mountain lion, fire cat, catamount, cougar, painter, puma and klandagi, which means "lord of the forest" in Cherokee.
  • Florida Panthers can not roar, but they can purr.
  • They are known to make eerily humanlike screams when courting.
  • More closely related to the common housecat than the African Lion.
  • The Florida Panther can swim across streams and canals.
  • Florida panthers can leap more than 15 feet when pouncing on their prey. There are no documented cases of attacks on humans in Florida.
  • They can run up to 35 mph, but only for a few hundred yards.
  • It is the official Florida state mammal.
  • The word "cougar" is from a South American Indian language and translates to "false deer." The Indians chose this name because the cougar can blend into the same habitat as its prey.
