Keep these fun facts and tips handy for your next wading bird encounter:

  • A Wood Stork can snap shut its bill in 25 milliseconds, one of the fastest reflex responses known for vertebrates!
  • It takes two! For Great Blue Herons, Roseate Spoonbills, and other wading birds, both parents alternate incubation duties.
  • Roseate Spoonbills are the only spoonbills native to the Western Hemisphere.
  • No spring chicken here. In April 2006, researchers at the Audubon of Florida in Tern Key, Florida discovered the oldest living Roseate Spoonbill, 16-year old “Enrico.”
  • The mascot for the University of Miami is “Sebastian,” a White Ibis!
