- On average, the Florida Division of Forestry treats 2 million acres of land with prescribed burns.
- Rising 300 feet above sea level, the Lake Wales Ridge area is the highest point in peninsular Florida.
- What has four wheels and can float in a swamp? Rollagons are specially designed vehicles used by the forest service to maneuver through soft terrain.
- The Florida Scrub Jay is a bird known for its ‘cooperative breeding’ habits. A Scrub Jay will remain with its parents for several years and perform helpful duties. Fledglings help parents rear young, look out for predators, and defend territories against other scrub jay families.
- The ancient location and rare endemic species found in the Lake Whales Ridge area has earned it the nickname, “Florida’s Attic.”
- Some like it hot! As the lightning capital of the world, Florida’s white hot phenomenon is known to start wild fires.
- Wild West? Florida’s version of a desert habitat is called scrub. This rare and vanishing ecosystem contains well-drained sandy soils and comes to life after periodic fires.
